Supply Chain Management and Business-to-Business E-Commerce

A growing number of companies and associations thought about venturing into e-commerce but often found themselves stump with concerns that hampers them from doing so.

Examples include:

  • An organization or start-up wants to put up an e-commerce portal and put products from a wide variety of suppliers on the site. Do they put all the products in one place for easy shipping or let the suppliers fulfill orders?
  • Orders come in with payments tallied manually (coming from bank or cash remittance). Deliveries made but customers claiming not being able to receive it, arriving late, or damage. What processes can be put in place to manage this situation?
  • Orders place to suppliers ahead for a coming big shopping season. Pre-orders were accepted from customers. However, some international suppliers shipped items did not arrive and eventually order cancelled, wrong items delivered, some arriving late, Bureau of Customs charging higher taxes than usual. As a result, affecting the fulfillment of orders. How do you prevent this situation?

How do you venture into e-commerce considering all the above elements? What factors should be in the cost, processes, and kind of people needed to manage a high-growth potential and ambitious e-commerce project?
